Rail Travel in Western Canada

Canada is a wonderful place to travel by rail. The following information provides a brief overview of the rail options offered by Mountain Park Travel Canada. It is simple to add on your favorite rail service to any vacation.

There are three passenger trains offered by MPT Canada including:

  • The Rocky Mountaineer Railtour - Western Canada
  • Via Rail
    Canada – Trans Continental Service

  • Whistler Mountaineer - Vancouver / Whistler / Return

An overview of each train service is provided.  Please see recommended itineraries listed under Rail Vacations.   Once in the spectacular region of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, you may select from a self-drive option or independent sightseeing.

Rocky Mountaineer Railtour

This daylight rail excursion offers 5 routes through the Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. Two classes of service include Goldleaf Dome and Redleaf Class. Travelers stop mid-way to overnight in hotel accommodations before continuing to their destination the following day. These trains depart three days a week and operate in both a west and eastbound direction.

Whistler Mountaineer

Travelers have their choice of Glacier Dome or Classic Rail service when traveling between North Vancouver and Whistler. Daily departures provide travelers with the opportunity to visit Whistler, B.C. during the summer and fall. Since Whistler is a walking village, it is a great way to relax and enjoy the route between Vancouver & Whistler.

Via Rail Canada

This original historic railtour provides transportation between Toronto and Vancouver. Via Rail's Silver and Blue Service offers private sleeping accommodations, public dome cars and dinning cars. Trains run three days a week in both east and westbound directions.

Rail + Car Rental or Motorcoach Sightseeing Options

When selecting a rail vacation there will most likely be a portion of the itinerary that includes another mode of transportation. You have your option of renting a car (self-drive), or we can include independent motorcoach sightseeing with driver/guide.

The itineraries listed under Rail Travel include car rental. One exception is the Rocky Mountaineer Railtour, which includes required transfers. Please see the rail itineraires listed under Independent Motorcoach Sightseeing should you prefer to let someone else do the driving!
