Explore Jasper National Park

Population: Approximately 5,000

Economy: Tourism / Parks Canada

Situated in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the small resort town of Jasper quickly becomes a favorite place for those that visit. Jasper offers a broad range of outdoor activities, championship golf and spectacular scenic beauty. Jasper is found within Jasper National Park, Canada's largest and most northerly Canadian Rocky Mountain National Park. Here you can discover Sunwapta Falls, Maligne Canyon and Lake and one of our favorite accommodations, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

One of the best things about travel to Jasper is driving along the Icefields Parkway from Banff, Lake Louise or Calgary. This is a wonderfully scenic drive and is considered one of the world's most scenic mountain highroads. To arrive in Jasper, you also have the option of taking the train from Vancouver or Edmonton to Jasper or driving 4 hours from Edmonton by car.

When asked if you should include Jasper in your itinerary, the answer is yes, but only if you have two nights to spend. Just like Banff, we believe you need a day to explore the area.

Local Recommendation
Jasper's vast protected wilderness gives visitors an opportunity to view many species of mountain wildlife including caribou, elk, moose, bear, mountain sheep and goats. The best time for viewing is early morning or just before sunset. Consider a drive on the Icefields Parkway just after sunrise!

Activity - Ice Explorer

Ice Explorer Ride

Everyone should take a day to explore the Icefields Parkway, the highway that connects Jasper and Lake Louise, where you will discover the Athabasca Glacier. Largest of all icefields in the Canadian Rockies, the Columbia Icefield is guarded by 11 of the Rockies' 22 highest peaks. Here, perennial snow accumulates and turns to ice which flows to feed six major outlet glaciers, three of Canada's largest rivers and eventually three oceans. The ice straddles the Continental Divide, two provinces and two national parks. The ice is 365 meters (1,200 feet) thick - about the height of the Empire State Building.

You will travel onto the glacier in a specially designed "Ice Explorer" to a turnaround point atop 333 meters of ice. Be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket - it may snow at anytime during your 1.5 hour Ice Explorer ride! Tours depart every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day.
